An Adobe Scan alternative with no account and no document cloud

Updated: 2026-09-02

Adobe Scan is a good scanner app. It has no ads, it is free to download, and it plugs into the rest of Adobe’s PDF tools. The reason people look for something else is usually narrower than "it is bad": they do not want their scans sitting in a cloud storage account, or they want the app to work the same with the network off.

This page sets out what Adobe says about where scans go, what its subscription costs, and where Adobe Scan is the better tool — which, for several things, it is. Every Adobe fact was read off Adobe’s own Google Play listing or adobe.com on the date given, with the URL recorded on the page.

ScanCrypt is made by Crypton Studio. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Adobe.

Adobe Scan and ScanCrypt, point by point

Checked on 2 September 2026.

The honest headline is that these two apps are built around opposite assumptions. Adobe Scan assumes your documents belong in an account you can reach from anywhere. ScanCrypt assumes they belong on the phone that took them. Almost every difference below follows from that one choice.

  • Account: Adobe Scan — Adobe’s own scanner page says you can sign in with your Adobe ID to reach the same files on desktop and mobile, and its Play Data safety entry lists name, email address, user IDs and phone number as collected, with "Account management" among the purposes; ScanCrypt — no account of any kind, with no sign-up, no email field and no login anywhere in the app.
  • Where documents are stored: Adobe Scan — its Play listing says scans "are automatically saved to Adobe Document Cloud", and Adobe’s scanner page says scans are stored in your Adobe Document Cloud storage; ScanCrypt — on the phone, in the app’s own library, with no document cloud for them to go to.
  • Offline: Adobe Scan — we could not verify from Adobe’s pages on 2 September 2026 what the app does with no network, so this page makes no claim about it; ScanCrypt — every document tool works in airplane mode, because none of them needs a server.
  • Ads: Adobe Scan — the Play listing carries no "Contains ads" badge in either the India or the United States store, so the free app appears to be ad-free; ScanCrypt — ads on the free tier only, and Pro removes every one of them.
  • Price: Adobe Scan — the India Play listing shows "In-app purchases" with a range of "₹200.00 - ₹7,100.00 per item", and Adobe’s own pricing pages list Acrobat Pro at ₹638.38/mo in India and US$19.99/mo in the United States on the annual-billed-monthly plan, both as shown on 2 September 2026; ScanCrypt — Pro Lifetime ₹649 / $7.99 once, or Pro Annual ₹249 / $2.99 per year. Prices vary by region.

Where Adobe Scan is better

These are real advantages, and if any of them is what you need, Adobe Scan is the right app to use.

  • It plugs into Acrobat. The listing describes opening a scan in Acrobat Reader to comment, highlight, fill forms and sign, and working across Scan, Reader and Acrobat on web and mobile. ScanCrypt has its own tools and no ecosystem behind them.
  • It runs on more than Android. Adobe’s scanner page describes reaching the same files on desktop and mobile. ScanCrypt is Android only, and there is no web or desktop version.
  • The free app carries no ads. Neither the India nor the United States Play listing shows a "Contains ads" badge. ScanCrypt’s free tier does show ads, and the only way to remove them is to buy Pro.
  • Your scans are reachable from another device. That is the whole point of Document Cloud, and it is exactly what ScanCrypt does not offer — moving a library is a manual backup file you carry yourself.
  • A far longer track record. The Play listing gives a release date of 31 May 2017, over 100,000,000 downloads and a 4.6 rating, from a company that has been defining the PDF format since it invented it. ScanCrypt shipped in 2026.
  • Office export is described without a paywall next to it. The listing describes exporting scans to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, and names only combining scans into one file and raising text-recognition capacity from 5 to 100 pages under its in-app purchase heading. In ScanCrypt version 1.1.2, PDF to Word is a Pro tool.

Where ScanCrypt is better

Nothing you scan leaves the phone. Scanning, text recognition and every PDF and image tool run on the device. The check takes ten seconds: turn on airplane mode and use the app. Every document tool behaves exactly the same, because there is no server for any of them to call.

There is no account. No sign-up, no email, no login, and nothing to sign in to before the first scan. That also means there is no storage quota to run out of, no account to be deactivated for inactivity, and no password to lose.

You can pay once instead of subscribing. The lifetime option is a single purchase through Google Play with nothing recurring, and there is an annual option for people who would rather pay less now.

And the list of what the app does send is short enough to print: on the free tier, ads through Google AdMob, including the advertising ID. Crash reports and anonymous usage analytics through Firebase, and analytics can be switched off in Settings → Privacy & Data. Feature flags and pricing through Firebase Remote Config. No document content is included in any of it.

  • No network needed for any document tool.
  • No account, no storage quota, no sign-in wall.
  • A one-time purchase option, not only a subscription.
  • A short, checkable list of what the app sends.

What we could not verify

Two things this page deliberately does not claim.

Whether an Adobe ID is required before you can scan at all. Adobe’s scanner page says the app is free to download and that you can sign in with an Adobe ID to reach the same files on desktop and mobile, but it does not say sign-in is mandatory, and helpx.adobe.com did not respond when we tried it on 2 September 2026. So this page says what Adobe says, and no more.

What Adobe Scan does with no network connection. Nothing on the pages we could read describes its offline behaviour, so the offline row above states only what ScanCrypt does.

How to do it in ScanCrypt

  1. Get your scans down from Document Cloud first. Open Adobe Scan or Acrobat with a connection and save each PDF to your phone’s storage — Downloads is fine. Do this before you uninstall anything, because a file that lives only in a cloud account is not something ScanCrypt can reach.
  2. Install ScanCrypt and open it. It runs on Android 6.0 (API 23) and up. There is no sign-in step: the Home screen is the first thing you see.
  3. Tap IMPORT PDF for the files you pulled from Document Cloud. The Home screen has IMPORT IMAGE and IMPORT PDF next to the scan button. Point IMPORT PDF at the Downloads folder you saved into a moment ago — picking a PDF copies it into the ScanCrypt library and opens it in the viewer, with no conversion and no re-encoding.
  4. Use Gallery Import for anything that did not come across as a PDF. If a file from Document Cloud landed on the phone as a JPEG rather than a PDF, the Gallery Import tool takes a batch of images, lets you order them, and writes them out as one PDF.
  5. Rebuild your folders on the phone. Document Cloud’s own folder structure stays in Adobe’s account — there is no import for it. Create a folder on the Folders tab instead, then use Move to Folder on a document. Folders can be nested, and a folder can be locked with a PIN.
  6. Turn off the network and keep working. With airplane mode on, scan, crop, merge, split, sign, annotate, compress and export all behave as normal. That is the difference this whole page is about, and it takes a minute to confirm for yourself.

Questions

Do I need an Adobe account for ScanCrypt?

No, and you do not need any other account either. ScanCrypt has no account system at all — no sign-up, no email field, no login screen. Install it and scan. The only account involved anywhere is the Google Play account you already used to install the app, and that is only for buying Pro.

Can ScanCrypt fill PDF forms?

Yes. The Fill Form tool reads the fillable fields out of a PDF, shows them as a list you type into, and saves a filled copy as a new file rather than overwriting the original. In version 1.1.2 it is free with ads — its remote gate ships switched off, so it is not behind Pro.

Does ScanCrypt do text recognition like Adobe Scan?

Yes, on the device, with no upload. In version 1.1.2 it is a Pro tool rather than a free one. There is no page cap tied to a subscription tier — the limit is your phone, not a plan.

Can I get my documents onto a computer without a cloud account?

Yes, the ordinary ways. Share or export any document to another app, plug the phone in and copy the file across, or use Backup & Restore to make one backup file and move it yourself. None of that involves an account, and none of it happens unless you start it.
